What Mosquito Carries Malaria?

It is entirely your decision, but don’t forget that mosquitoes can also put our health at risk.

That is why you should take the mosquito control very seriously because the last thing you want is to put your family or even your pets in danger. We are all annoyed by these pesky creatures, but besides being disturbing they are also very dangerous. Once we are aware of this thing, it is only a matter of time before we take some serious measures.

In order to convince you how important it is to avoid being bitten by a mosquito, we decided to offer you some information about malaria – a mosquito-borne disease that affects many people and animals.

 

Malaria

There are a large number of insects that are responsible for direct transmission of certain diseases, and there are others that are intermediate hosts or carriers. There are many pathogens that can be transmitted by insects and among them we can remember bacteria, protozoa, viruses, roundworms, flukes, or tapeworms.

Malaria, for example, is the principal illness carried by insects, and the ones that are responsible are mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. This infectious disease can affect both humans and animals and it poses a major risk to many individuals traveling especially in the tropical and the subtropical regions around the world.

Moreover, malaria can be fatal and it is believed to affect about 250 million people around the globe, and as many as 2 million individuals die every year. Also, each year in the USA there are a few cases of malaria but have no worries as those cases are usually persons who have traveled to those areas that have a high risk of getting sick.

It all starts with a bite and the affected person will begin to experience various symptoms such as fever, vomiting, tiredness, and headaches. However, in severe cases, malaria can lead to seizure, coma, or even death. Furthermore, these symptoms will only start 10 to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Mosquito transmission cycle

Mosquitos will get infected when they bite a person who has malaria, and then when they bite another person, they transmit the parasite from one to another. The parasite enters the body of the individual and then it will start to travel to the liver. And this is where the interesting part comes in – the parasite can stay dormant for as long as one year!

Next step will be for the parasites to leave the liver and get into the bloodstream – they will infect the red blood cells. Only now the infected person will start experiencing various symptoms that are common in many cases with malaria. When the patient is at this stage and he/she gets bitten by another mosquito, the process repeats itself.

The new mosquito will become infected and it will move on to transmit it to the next victim, and this happens multiple times. Also, there is another way for a person to get infected with malaria. As we have mentioned earlier, the parasite will affect the red blood cells which means that a person can get malaria from exposure to infected blood.

The most common situations are those when the disease is transmitted from mother to unborn child, through blood transfusions, or when an infected person shares needles used to inject drugs with another person. Also, it is easy to imagine that it is more likely to get malaria when you visit or you live in an area where the disease is common.  

 

Treatment

The treatment is meant to eliminate the Plasmodium parasite from the bloodstream, and those individuals who are not capable of taking oral medications will be administered intravenous infusion. The most common drugs that are used against this disease are Chloroquine, Quinine, Mefloquine, Tetracycline, Clindamycin, Doxycycline, and others.

Moreover, it is important to know what species of the parasite has affected the patient in order to make sure that he/she is given the right medication. Also, the clinical status of the patient is also essential when the doctor prescribes certain drugs to him/her. Drug allergies, any illness, or other medical condition, or pregnancy will also decide what type of treatment the individual will follow.

Furthermore, the doctor will also do some blood tests in order to determine if the illness is causing any severe complications. While some blood tests might only take 15 minutes to produce the results, there are some that can take several days to complete. The good news is that researchers are constantly looking for new and more developed antimalarial drugs.

The bad news is that drug-resistant parasites keep on evolving which means that new drugs need to be formulated in order to fight off malaria completely. Researchers have discovered one type of malaria parasite that became resistant to almost all drugs available nowadays on the market.

Other diseases carried by mosquitoes

Dengue fever is caused by a Flavivirus – a type of virus from the family Flaviviridae. This disease is transmitted by a bite of a mosquito of the genus Aedes, and it is mostly found around stagnant water locations. Most people affected by this disease live in various places such as Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean, Australia, or sub-Saharan Africa.

The infected individuals will experience symptoms such as headache, vomiting, joint and muscle pains, and high fever. Another common symptom that most people endure is a sort of skin rash. Also, these symptoms appear 3 to 14 days after infection, and for a person to recover completely he/she will need to wait anywhere from two to seven days.

Fortunately, there has been approved a vaccine that is commercially available in several countries. A good way to avoid these bites is to create an unwelcome environment for these mosquitos which means that you should cover the standing water. Also, if you are planning to visit one of those affected areas you should wear clothes that will cover much of your body.

The West Nile disease is another infection caused by a Flavivirus and the one responsible for it is another type of mosquito but this time from the Culex genus. While at the beginning the disease affected Africa and India, and only some parts of Europe, it has started to affect the American continent as well, from East to West, and to Eastern Europe and Russia.
